There are go-getters, and then there are GO-GETTERS. Pretty safe to say that Sophie Jaffe falls in the latter category. Yogi, mom of 2, raw food chef, health and wellness expert, founder of superfood brand Philosophie…we’re lucky enough to be working with her in Santa Monica this fall. We can all do anything we want. Truly. We are all standing in our own way because we think we have to do something perfectly or “right”. There is no right. There is just showing up and doing.
Best piece of advice you ever got.
Learning the word “no.” Saying “no” to others is actually oftentimes saying “yes” to yourself.
Worst piece of advice you ever got.
I get all sorts of unsolicited advice from other mothers. They loveeeee to share their two cents even when it isn’t asked for. 😉
Go-to superfood.
My berry bliss blend. It’s packed with vitamin C so it works on supporting and strengthening our immune systems while helping our skin glow from the inside out. I add it to smoothies, juice, oats, yogurt and just about anything else.
Your upcoming workshop in Santa Monica is all about the new moon. What do we as women need to know?
As women, we are all affected by the moon and her shifts. The new moon is a time to start fresh, set new intentions for the month ahead, connect inward and check in with our shadowy side. This is a time to journal, take long baths, meditate, rest and cleanse. Solo time is necessary.
 
What should we be learning from this experience?
It’s completely normal to feel more emotional around the new moon. It’s vital to connect with other women to be truly “seen” and felt, and that we are always supported and held by our sisters, even if we don’t always see it or feel it.
 
Your favorite crystal and why:
 
Citrine is so beautiful. It also manifests abundance and brings energies of generosity so that prosperity and success is shared. Citrine is a solar plexus chakra stone used metaphysically to increase, magnify and clarify personal power and energy.
 
What does free mean to you?
Free means expressing myself and living without restrictions — mentally or physically — so that I can feel open, vulnerable and fully connected. Free is a state of mind and I can get there as long as I’m focused on the moment, not future-tripping or living in the past.

Eat Pretty: Spring Detox with Jolene Hart, Week 1

You feel it coming, right? Any moment now, spring— season of rebirth and renewal— will arrive. You’ll unzip your coat, shed a few extra layers, and feel the sun on your face. To get in sync with the powerful cycles of nature, this is also the time to support your body’s detox processes, ensuring that your energy soars, your skin glows, and your body naturally lets go of any winter weight that you’ve been carrying.

Over the next four weeks, I’ll guide you through the most effective nutrition and lifestyle shifts that you can make this season, to ensure that you give your body the spring detox it craves. Spring detox can be an annual ritual that’s refreshing and delicious—no juice cleanse necessary. My clients are focusing on these very same spring strategies that I’ll be sharing, so consider this your free health coach check-in, and be sure to check back in the weeks ahead! The goal, as always, is to get you looking and feeling your best this season, from the inside out.

Week 1: Go Green

At the very moment that your body needs detox, nature delivers. Pop into a grocery store or your local farmer’s market, and you’ll notice that the fresh foods beginning to emerge share a common color: green. Think asparagus, artichokes, spring onions, arugula, watercress, spinach, dandelion, green beans, peas, and sprouts. The many edible shades of green that you’ll find this season offer essential spring cleansing properties, and represent a stark change from the heavier, cooked foods that you’ve been likely eating during the winter. Incorporate some of these foods raw, in a smoothie or raw salad, and others lightly cooked, in a soup or sauté. The important thing is that you add more green to your diet this season.

What makes these spring green foods so highly detoxifying? Their spectrum of phytochemicals, like chlorophyll in greens, sulforaphane in sprouts, and silymarin in artichokes, supports liver health, boosts the body’s key antioxidant glutathione, oxygenates your blood, and aids the removal of toxic compounds. Their fiber content feeds the good bacteria in your body and helps ensure that you’re eliminating all the toxins you cleanse. If you’re not sure what to eat this season, just remember the rule to bring in more green.

You can start with this simple salad, which has mighty detox benefits for your beauty and body:

Tahini-Balsamic Beet Salad

This warm salad is packed with beauty minerals and cleansing phytochemicals, from the powerful betalains in beets to the chlorophyll in spinach and beet greens. The addition of tahini delivers skin-clearing zinc and healthy fats that help you absorb all your spring skin nutrition.

Serves 4 to 6

Ingredients

1 bunch organic beets (3 to 4), with greens

1 bunch organic spinach

1 tsp coconut oil or ghee

¼ cup tahini

2 tbsp balsamic vinegar

1 1/2 tsp tamari

¼ cup warm water

½ tsp garlic powder

Unrefined salt

Ground black pepper

Sesame seeds

Method

Preheat oven to 400F. Remove and reserve beet greens, scrub beets, and wrap in foil. Place wrapped beets on a baking sheet and roast for 45 minutes. Set aside to cool.

Meanwhile, rinse and chop beet greens, including a small amount of beet green stems, as well as spinach. In a sauté pan, melt coconut oil or ghee, and cook greens until wilted. Season with salt and pepper.

In a small bowl, whisk together tahini, vinegar, tamari, water, and garlic powder. Set aside.

Use foil to slide the skins off of your roasted and cooled beets, then chop them into bite-sized chunks. Arrange your salad on individual plates by topping a bed of sautéed greens with beet chunks, and drizzling with a generous amount of tahini-balsamic dressing. Sprinkle with sesame seeds and serve.

Become Your Own Health Coach

Providing a few essential tools to help you stay on track through life’s ups and downs…

Before I became a certified health coach, I knew it was imperative that I first address and change my own dietary habits. Better health and an enriched quality of life empowered me to become certified and bestow onto others what I had learned along the way. It is a joy to work with clients one-on-one, encouraging and helping them to achieve true health by tuning into their own bodies and identifying what they need and don’t need. By providing essential tools my clients are able to stay on track through life’s ups and downs.

During my personal journey, I quickly realized that depriving myself of certain foods was not the way to go. When I told myself I couldn’t have something, I craved it even more — my want for ice cream or chocolate and peanut butter became extra strong and usually resulted in overindulging. I slowly and strategically started to add nutrient-rich foods to my diet and “crowd out” the unnecessary ones. Before health coaching, my food intake consisted primarily of instant or packaged foods, and eating out. I was never one to eat leafy greens regularly so I made it a rule to eat as much as I could each day and then, if I wanted to indulge in sweets, I could because I “earned” it. What ended up happening? My sweet tooth faded away — my body was more satisfied from the nutrients I was giving it. When you are filling up on nutrient-dense foods, your body learns balance and, in turn, happiness.

A good rule to balance and health — increase real whole foods (foods that are grown in the earth and not packaged or processed). For two weeks, try adding one new whole food at a time to help develop better habits. Start with colorful vegetables such as peppers, sweet potatoes, Brussels sprouts, tomatoes, asparagus. For the next two weeks make it a point to have those vegetables each day. Know where you can easily purchase them — like the Sunday farmers’ market or your local grocery store — and plan an accommodating meal plan. Will you make a smoothie with the ingredients? Juice, salad, soup or stew?  After the two weeks is up, pick another whole food group like gluten-free grains (maybe brown rice or quinoa) and add it every day with your brightly colored veggies!

Increase your intake of real whole foods.

Increase your intake of: leafy greens, colorful fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and clean, lean proteins.

Food journal.

What have you eaten today? How do you feel?

In my schooling, one of my favorite takeaways (and one I encourage all of my clients to try) is food journaling, making note of every breakfast, lunch, dinner and snack, and how each meal made you feel. Did the meal make you tired or energized? Were you  full and satisfied or did you crave something sweet or salty? Maybe you experienced a skin reaction, or you experienced stomach pain. Write down what is happening. You also may find yourself eating at odd hours of the day during stressful periods, or maybe you’re not eating often enough. Journaling can help you get the root of your emotions, and help you identify patterns in what makes you feel your best.

These are just a few tools I’ve found to be most effective when working with others and balancing my own health. Be sure you are eating enough throughout the day, incorporating nutrient-dense foods, and feeling good about what you’re putting in your body.  I’ll be sharing other tips and tidbits in the next few weeks, and hope that you find something that resonates for you or inspires you to become your own health coach.
