Wellness Wednesday: A New Way to Exfoliate

Wellness Wednesday: A New Way to Exfoliate

This kinder, gentler solution really works…

Exfoliating your skin usually comes with a downside — a lot of dryness and an unmistakable tight-pore feeling. Almost every product I’ve used has made my face feel so uncomfortable that I decided I’d rather deal with some dead skin and rough patches than suffer through the side effects of exfoliating. That’s why I was skeptical about trying The Beauty Chef’s Probiotic Skin Refiner. It claimed to exfoliate AND hydrate AND boost collagen production. Hmm, really, really? I pictured my skin turning red and flaky, with an intense burning sensation washing over me. But, after a summer of sweat and sunscreen, my pores were crying out for some help. I needed a good cleaning session.

I’ll cut right to the chase and tell you that the Skin Refiner is pretty amazing. It’s rich in lactic acid — a unique alpha hydroxy acid that breaks down dead skin cells and ups your skin’s natural moisturizing factors. What this means: when you put it on, it doesn’t dry out your face! Like many of The Beauty Chef’s products, it taps into the benefits of bio-fermented foods and probiotics to balance your complexion’s healthy flora levels, fight dark spots and boost your skin’s immunity and collagen growth (basically this elixir has all your needs handled).

Another bonus: Unlike other exfoliators that can only be used at night, this one can be dabbed on twice a day, so you can get the smoother, brighter results faster. Just soak a cotton pad and swipe on after cleansing. I applied a moisturizer afterward but if your skin is oily you could skip that step. It’s so gentle you can make the refiner part of your everyday routine — your pores will thank you.

Quick Recap: The Benefits

Triple threat: Exfoliates, hydrates and firms skin all in one!

Rich in probiotics to balance skin.

Contains bio-fermented extracts.

Plumps skin.

Lightens dark spots.

No tingling or burning!

Dab on morning and night.

What’s the Best Workout for You According to the Zodiac?

What’s the Best Workout for You According to the Zodiac?

The Numinous’ Ruby Warrington and writer Allie White team up to consider what routines best suit your sign…

Workout roulette has never been more popular. With new boutiques popping up seemingly overnight, chain gyms regularly adding classes to their schedules and an embarrassment of riches when it comes to online and app options, you could probably go years without ever repeating a workout. (All the cute outfits you’d get to wear wouldn’t hurt either.)

But if you’re anything like me, constantly swiping through classes and routines can get a little overwhelming. Variety is great and gives your body the opportunity to experience new things, but sometimes you just want a way to sweat that you know you (and your body) will love.

Maybe you have a short attention span and need a workout that constantly changes things up. Or you’re a little high-strung and need 60 solid minutes of mellow flow. Or you’re a social butterfly and prefer group exercise.

If these personality traits sound familiar, I’d bet good money (say, one $45 spin class?) that you’re into your horoscopes. And since you’re already a zodiac believer, why not use it to help determine what kind of workout jives with your sign. After all, from Aries to Pisces, every astrological sign has its likes and dislikes, strengths and weaknesses, information that can help determine your ideal workout.

To help decode what the stars really think our bodies need, I talked to Ruby Warrington, founder of The Numinous, author of Material Girl, Mystical World, and astrology/tarot/zodiac wizardess. Below, you’ll find her suggestions on how, why and when to move for your body based on the wonders of astrology. Now get moving!

ARIES

Ruled by Mars, the Roman god of war, it’s no surprise that Aries needs something quick, exciting and a bit competitive for a workout. According to Warrington, tabata is the perfect way for an Aries to sweat: the fast-paced interval training caters to your short attention span and the timed exercises make things exciting and even let you compete a bit with yourself when it comes to reps.

TAURUS

You’re calm, cool and collected—more patient than any other sign. It’s exactly this patience that makes weight training the perfect workout for  you, Taurus, since weights requires a slow, steady and controlled approach to build strength like your namesake bull. And to feed the part of your sign that likes to feel stable and grounded, try taking your workout outside. Burpees, planks and push-ups in nature use your own body weight and help you connect to the earth.

GEMINI

The social butterfly of the cosmos, it’s super-important that Geminis choose a workout that offers variety and a social aspect or your inner twins will get bored with the monotony and disengage. Since you love to talk, Warrington says tennis is an ideal way to get your sweat on: It’ll kick up your heart rate, keep you on your toes and is basically like a conversation with a racket and ball.

CANCER

As the homebodies of the astrological world, Cancers are more likely to curl up with a good book on the couch than do bicep curls on a weight bench. But, crab friend, this love of home and hearth also means you’re protective of the ones you love and would do anything to defend what you care about. With that in mind, try a boxing class. You may be surprised how good it feels not only to punch the crap out of a bag, but also to gain the skills you need for self-defense.

LEO

Ah, Leo, always the center of attention and life of the party—and for good reason! Everything you do is a masterclass in performing and enjoying yourself, so it’s no surprise that Warrington says to get your butt to a dance class. It’ll feel more like a performance than a workout, and your infectious energy will trickle down to everyone else, basically guaranteeing a party in the studio.

VIRGO

Virgo, virgo, virgo, lover of order, focus and meticulousness (who also needs to chill out sometimes). You’re also a solver, so finding a workout that takes your mind off of fixing things is crucial. Luckily, yoga seems like it was practically invented for virgos: the emphasis on form fulfills the part of you that craves precision and alignment, while the breath work and savasana give you an excuse to chill.

LIBRA

Known for their love of beauty and aesthetic, Libras are less likely to opt for a workout that leaves them sweaty, red-faced and gasping for air. But finding something effective and pretty? That’s a Libra’s sweat sweet spot. According to Warrington, barre workouts let you focus on balance and grace with their ballet-style movements while also toning and lengthening your muscles. What’s prettier than that?

SCORPIO

Intense and laser-focused, Scorpios thrive when they feel like they’re in control. You’re also always up for a challenge and find satisfaction from pushing yourself beyond what you thought was possible. So realizing that you can contort yourself around a Pilates reformer is the ultimate workout, fiery Scorpio. You won’t rest until you’ve perfected the poses and the whole thing will leave you feeling strong and empowered, raring to get back on the reformer ASAP.

SAGITTARIUS

Adventurous, energetic, naturally athletic and a bit competitive, Sagittarians aren’t content with treadmill runs. On the contrary, Warrington says that to really get a great workout, you archers need something more adrenalin-pumping, like skiing or surfing. Activities like these offer killer full-body workouts, check off your risk-taking box and can even fulfill your love of travel. When you can’t jet off to a mountain or ocean, try something like CrossFit, adventure racing or trail running to satiate those adventurous needs.

CAPRICORN

Ruled by no-nonsense Saturn (the god of time and order), Capricorns are disciplined, dependable and committed, so workouts that harness your patience and endurance are ideal. You want to feel like you’ve accomplished something post-workout, which is why Warrington says long-distance running is ideal for you goats. These miles-long runs showcase your stamina and let you commit to pushing yourself.

AQUARIUS

Put an Aquarius in a group environment and they seem to spring to life. Even though you may seem shy and quiet at first, you thrive when it comes to teamwork and group activities. So for your perfect workout, Warrington suggests something that let’s the team spirit you have in spades really shine, like a lively game of softball that’ll have you working together and cheering on teammates.

PISCES

As the wateriest of water signs, dear Pisces, you may literally feel like a fish out of water when exercising on land. So it’s no surprise that your perfect workout is swimming. Not only will it give you an excuse to get your fins wet, but as the most sensitive sign of the zodiac, solo laps offer a chance to focus, calm down and tune out the world around you.

FP Movement: Hula Hoop Dreams

FP Movement: Hula Hoop Dreams

“Hula hooping has turned into such a release for me…”

Movement is more than running, yoga, pilates… movement is freedom and happiness to move in any fashion that suits you best. So when we were recently introduced Megan (who also happens to work in our Portland store!) we knew it was something special. Utilizing the practice of dance and continuous motion, her love of hula hooping was recognized when yoga wasn’t yielding the mental release she craved. Read on to find out more about this #fpmovement muse.

What inspired you to start hula hooping?

I’ll never forget being in a late-night crowd and at a music festival, completely mesmerized by a girl hooping in front of me. Her movement was so freeing, she looked so happy. After that weekend, I went home and began searching for a hoop to start practicing with!

Hooping benefits…

Hooping is great for so many reasons but, if I had to pick my favorite, it would be that it’s actually an intense brain game! It exercises your reflexes an incredible amount.

How do you work hooping into your fitness routine?

Hooping can be an intense cardio and upper arm workout, depending on the pace you set! And music is key. Nothing gets my heart racing more than old fashioned waist hooping and incorporating chest hooping. I also like to start each flow session by sitting inside my hoop and stretching it out first.

3 favorite FP movement pieces to hula hoop in…

Kyoto Legging! The fit is so soft and comfortable and has a pocket big enough for my phone.

Tighten Up Tank! I own a few color ways — great under a piece that is secure when you get moving.

Retro Vibes Hoodie! This was my go-to piece through the rainy season here in the PNW, re: hood!

What’s your spirit animal?

A wolf! I am dependent on my immediate family, but beyond that, I am pretty introverted. A drifter of sorts, you could say.

What do you do when not hooping?

When I’m not immersed in my hoop, you can find me with my dog/s. (I’m still getting used to saying that plurally — we just adopted a friend for our 8-year-old mutt!) They keep me on my toes. We love to be outside, exploring the greater Portland area and all the hiking it has to offer.

What motivates you to hula hoop?

Hula hooping has turned into such a release for me. I find myself most motivated to pick up a hoop after I’ve had a really long day at work. I have tried several failed attempts at getting into yoga to relax and unwind, but my mind has never been still enough. I have found that there is something so meditative about stepping into that circle and focusing only on that.

Greatest hula hooping experience… (accomplishment!?)

Unlocking chest hooping! Hooping around my chest has been the most challenging thing for me on this journey so far. It took me a solid 4 months of drilling to get it down pat. I have seen such improvement in my posture and my chest cavity feels much more open when I breathe deeply.

Your go-to for tricks?

I am self-taught, but with the help of YouTube and Instagram. Practicing outside is ideal so I don’t have to worry about breaking anything in my apartment, ha!

Is there a large hooping community in Portland?

I am learning more and more every day about hidden hoop gems in the Portland area! There is even a Hula Hoop store in SE Portland. The flow community across the country is quite impressive!

Recommendations to starting your own hoop journey…

If you’re thinking about picking up a hoop, I recommend learning with a big one first! It allows for more reaction time when learning new things. If you can’t seem to nail a trick, leave it and come back to it. Most importantly, have FUN with it!!

What does free mean to you?

For me, being free is about doing things for myself and not having fear of the way others might perceive me.

A sloth.

The warmth of the sun.

Five fave songs to move you…

“Garage Skank” by Kano, “Pink Skies” by LANY, “Mama” by Spice Girls, “High” by Lighthouse Family, and “Miss Independent” by Ne-Yo.

Biggest obstacle that you’ve overcome…

Leaving home at 16 .

When you want to relax, you…

Jump in bed.

Can’t live without…

My thumb.

Last person you talked to on the phone…

My mum.

Best advice you ever got was…

Put a dip in your hip, glide in your stride, a bop in your hop, and boogy on down to the curry shop!

What does free mean to you?

Not being answerable to anybody.

Think Free: Sophia Tatum

Delving into the routines of those girls featured in our April ’17 Movement campaign…

Think Free. Consider this your April (and ongoing) mantra. Here to help inspire and motivate you on your journey are 3 of our favorite movers and shakers. Today, we’re talking to FP fave Sophia Tatum

Your spirit animal?

My spirit animal would have to be an owl. They’re such beautiful and wise creatures.

 Your greatest daily inspiration?

My parents!! Or my huge cup of coffee. 🙂 The reason I say my parents — no matter what life throws at them, they never back down and always keep fighting the fight. And coffee is just pure HEAVEN.

Five fave songs to move you…

This is always such a hard question because I’ll get bored of certain songs or my mood changes. But at this moment, I would have to say:

“Bossa Nova Baby” by Elvis, “Roots Radical” by Rancid, “Strangers Like Me” by Phil Collins, anything from the 50s, and “Minor Swings” by Django Reinhardt.

Biggest obstacle that you’ve overcome…

The biggest obstacle I’ve had to overcome is body image. Like most girls, I struggled with liking who I was in my own skin. When I was dancing, I always thought my thighs and boobs were too big. I would get jealous of the natural twiggy girls with no boobs and string bean legs. Then when I became a model it sort of got worse. I would spend hours on Instagram looking at these skinny girls in bathing suits and wishing I had their bodies. I hated everything about my body and would go through major depressions every couple of months. And this lasted 5 years — hating who I was. Then, about two months ago, I took matters into my own hands and adopted a disciplined eating and workout program, with lots of mental love. And I came to realize that I had tortured myself for too long. And I needed to start loving who I was.

When you want to relax, you…

I usually watch an insane amount of movies (preferably in a hot, lavender bath) or I will go and walk the beach if it’s possible.

Can’t live without…

Lord of the Rings!!!! I’m a huge geek when it comes to LOTR, Peter Jackson, and J. R. R. Tolkien.

Last person you talked to on the phone…

I think it was my mom. 😉

Best advice you ever got was…

Don’t let others dictate your life. You are the captain of your ship and you can accomplish anything you set your mind to.

What does free mean to you?

Being everything and anything you want to be and not caring what others may think or say.

Think Free: Anna Herrin

Delving into the routines of those girls featured in our April ’17 Movement campaign…

Think Free. Consider this your April (and ongoing) mantra. Here to help inspire and motivate you on your journey are 3 of our favorite movers and shakers: first up, the lovely Anna Herrin.

Your spirit animal?

Hmm..I would say dolphin, but my friends would probably say sloth.

Biggest obstacle that you’ve overcome…

I had mercury poisoning for a long time, so I was constantly confused — parts of my body were going numb, and my hair was falling out… the doctors kept misdiagnosing me and would just kept telling me to see a shrink…finally they were able to tell me what was wrong and I could work on healing, not being told I was crazy (which is also pretty accurate 🙊

When you want to relax, you…

Go to a hot yin yoga class, take a nice long salt bath, get into my favorite sweat pants, jump into bed, and sleep!

Can’t live without…

A big cozy hoodie…it feels like home.

Last person you talked to on the phone…

My mom…always, all the time 🙈

Best advice you ever got was…

Treat yourself as you would your own best friend! Be kind, loving and compassionate, (don’t call yourself a fat loser) because at the end of the day we’re always stuck with ourselves, so might as well be good company!

Your greatest daily inspiration?

Making myself into someone I can be proud of. Trying to make all the best decisions I can so that when life calls, I’m ready for it!

Five fave songs to move you…

Eeeek, so hard to narrow down five!

“Up, Up & Away” by Kid Cudi, “American Woman” by Lenny Kravitz (so embarrassing), “Killing in the Name” by Rage Against the Machine, “Rack City” by Tyga (again, so embarrassing), and last but certainly not least, “Feelin’ Myself” by Will.I.Am and Miley Cyrus! 🙈

What does free mean to you?

Not having to be anywhere, at anytime, wearing anything specific. Being able to do whatever makes you happy, and doing it just for you.
