Who Do the Boodoo That She Do So Well?

Who Do the Boodoo That She Do So Well?

Dancer Nardia Boodoo has graced many a stage with her delicate art of ballet — read on as she graces Free People with her presence…

Your zodiac sign: Pisces
Spirit animal: Leopard
Can you remember the moment you realized you were, at heart, a dancer? For as long as I could remember I was in love with ballet. My first performance with a professional company was when I a trainee, I was performing the dryad scene in Don Quixote. And I was last off stage. I couldn’t sleep that night, I was high from excitement and I knew I wanted to do this for the rest of my life.
Do you have any go-to stretches/exercises to warm up/cool down your day? For warm up I do Pilates. I do planks to warm up my core. Bridges for my flutes and hamstrings, and clam shells for my turn out. My fave stretches are the splits, lunges for my psoas, and down dog.
Go-to beauty tips: Always wash your face at night. All-natural products are healthier for your delicate skin. Always moisturize!
Favorite song you’ve ever danced to: The Serenade by George Balanchine contains the most beautiful score by Tchaikovsky.
5 words that describe how dancing makes you feel. Beautiful, happy, peaceful, brave, empowered.
Have you ever gone to the ballet just to watch? I always watch ballet. When it’s theater week and my cast isn’t dancing I watch from the audience.
5 favorite things about Washington DC:
I love Amsterdam Falafel shop on 18th street
18th Street Lounge is always a cool place to go — great variety of people and music.
Anything at the Kennedy Center. Arts is enriching and vital to be my existence. Its give you context.
I love Georgetown. So colonial and cute!! With lots of cool shops!
Kayaking down the Potomac — the views of the monuments are amazing
What does “free” mean to you? Free, to me, is living your best uninhibited life!!

Office Style: Meet April

Hello Hello, it’s me!

Your position at Free People…

I’m the Editorial Assistant for our Brand Marketing team! I also head all things creative for FPMovement on social.

How does your job influence your personal style?

I would say my lifestyle influences my personal style more than my job. I definitely get inspired by the women around the office, though — there are some pretty wicked outfits that stroll the halls.

What is your personal style?

A little bit of everything. I think the best way to describe my style these days is Sporty Spice meets Mountain Chic meets Hype Beast, HA!

Go-to fashion rule or styling trick?

My go-to rule is comfort. I don’t believe in not mixing colors, or prints, no matter what season it is! I really just wake up and whatever I feel best in is what I wear. It’s the worst feeling when you walk out of the house and don’t feel comfortable… then it is just on your mind all day and you’re miserable. I don’t care about what people think… if I own it, people can feel that no matter how out of place the outfit may be.

Favorite part about your job?

Seeing creative ideas come to life…

Most challenging part of your job?

 Currently, balance!

Kristina… “Winona Ryder in the 90s meets Spinelli from recess…”

Your position at Free People…

Designer – Day Dresses.

How does your job influence your personal style?

I try to stay true to my personal aesthetic no matter what but, working in fashion, being around it almost every day, you are definitely influenced by what you look to for inspiration, subconsciously or not. So sometimes, when I see things I like, I’ll try to find versions of it on Etsy or elsewhere.

What is your personal style?

“Winona Ryder in the 90s meets Spinelli from recess”. But honestly, I don’t buy clothes all that often, and when I do it’s picking up random things I see and I know I’ll really love. Anyone I know will tell you I’m almost always in black. Usually either high-waisted skinny jeans and a band tee or some kind of crop top if I’m at work or out for the night. Sometimes a dress, if I’m going somewhere cute. I probably almost always have a choker on and a lot of silver jewelry because I feel naked without it.

Go-to fashion rule or styling trick?

I can’t wear anything that I don’t feel comfortable in.

Favorite part about your job?

Mocking! We make a lot of our designs by hand to show in meetings and it’s definitely the most fun. Sketching is a close second but, with mocking, you get to make your design exactly what you want it to be in every aspect, from fabric to fit to trims to color or print — it’s the best way to see what’s in your head come to life.

Most challenging part of your job?

Having too many ideas and not enough time to make them happen! haha

Dolman Moto Jacket

Modern Femme Vegan Mini

Top Peak Hiker Boot

Vegan Leather Lattice Skinny Pant

One thing in your closet that you could not live without?

My leather jacket. I’m pretty sure it’s child-sized so it fits cropped and the sleeves are short, but it’s perfect. I bought it at a vintage store in New Hope probably 3 years ago and I wear it almost every day when the weather is right, so it’s super broken in. It has a bunch of my favorite pins on it and I’d be so sad if I lost it.

What Happens in the Coat Check Stays in the Coat Check — But Does It Really?

What Happens in the Coat Check Stays in the Coat Check — But Does It Really?

Vogue’s 125th anniversary + Free People = Coat Check Stories

For actress and writer Hailey Benton Gates, a venue’s coat check is more than just a place to hang clothes — it’s where you find out the secrets of the patrons inside. “The coat check is a profession ripe with strange encounters and one that is predominantly female,” Gates explains of her interest in that small closet by the entrance. “Why is it that we trust women to guard our precious things over men?”

To answer that question, Gates interviewed scores of real coat-check girls from all over New York City. Some were friends, others were strangers, but what these women had in common is they all had spent a significant amount of time handling the outerwear of the city’s finest clientele. “Director Danielle Katvan and I cast a wide net, so I still have people sending me coat-check stories,” Gates says. “There’s almost enough to make a documentary!”

For Vogue’s short film, Gates compiled stories from three of the women she interviewed. Alissa shared her memory of the night a famous director walked into the upscale Italian restaurant she worked in. “I won’t say who, but he may have directed a movie that rhymes with gulp diction,” she admits. Meanwhile, Rebecca revealed which customers are the ones who always lose their tickets and almost never tip. (Hint: It’s whom you’d least expect.) And Laura opened up about the time she gave a client the wrong jacket — a coat-check girl’s worst nightmare.

Gates plays the part of all three of these women, lip-syncing their taped stories while a rack of Free People’s coats circles around the closet of Gramercy Park’s National Arts Club. “We took a long time to pick a location,” Gates explains. “I really wanted one of those coat checks that has that dry-cleaner conveyer belt thing, but there are not very many of them.” Lucky for her, she found just the right setting for her video at the historic spot. “It was exciting for me because the National Arts Club is also home to the Newswomen’s Club of New York, of which I am a proud member.”

As for whether there were any stories too salacious to include in this short film, Gates remains coy. “There were many,” she says with a laugh. “One of my favorites concerned a young girl whose father ran a bar in the East Village. He had her running the coat check at the ripe old age of 11. Hilarity and strangeness ensued.” Only in New York.
