NYPD Sergeant Who Oversaw Daniel Pantaleo Loses 20 Vacation Days

This was originally posted on https://www.essence.com/news/kizzy-adonis-daniel-pantaleo-eric-garner/ along with the image used.

The NYPD sergeant, who was supposed to be supervising Daniel Pantaleo when he placed Eric Garner in a banned chokehold, will not face a disciplinary trial but will lose a whopping 20 vacation days for failing to manage Pantaleo properly.

According to NBC New York, the NYPD commissioner evaluated Sgt. Kizzy Adonis’ supervision of officers that day and acknowledged that while it was “lacking in certain areas,” in the end it was concluded, “that nothing about her actions on that day either caused the use of the banned chokehold or delayed the arrival of medical attention for Mr. Garner.”

At the time of Garner’s death, Adonis had been recently promoted to sergeant and assigned to the Staten Island District.

According to the report, a source called Adonis accepting the disciplinary action was “a great deal. They just want to put this to bed.”

Apparently, the deal had been something offered a while ago, but Adonis only accepted it now after “seeing the writing on the wall,” the source said.

Her decision comes mere days after the officer she was meant to be supervising was fired.

Rev. Al Sharpton, the president of the National Action Network took issue with Adonis; punishment, calling it “no penalty at all” in a statement.

“The decision by the NYPD to dock Sgt. Kizzy Adonis twenty vacation days is too little too late. In fact, the loss of vacation days is akin to no penalty at all. If the penalty for not doing your job is that you can keep doing your job, it is an injustice to the family of Eric Garner and the residents of New York City. We want all of the officers involved in Eric’s case to be brought to justice,” the statement said.

The Obamas Open Up About Producing New Netflix Documentary And Future Projects

This was originally posted on https://www.essence.com/entertainment/obamas-talk-producing-netflix-documentary-american-factory/ along with the image used.

It was announced last May that the Obamas had signed a groundbreaking agreement with streaming giant, Netflix, to “produce a diverse mix of content, including the potential for scripted series, unscripted series, docu-series, documentaries and features.”

And now, the first release from the former First Couple –under their Higher Ground Productions banner–is around the corner and they are opening up about their new documentary, American Factory.

During a recent sit-down with the documentary’s filmmakers, Julia Reichert and Steven Bognar, the beloved couple discuss the kinds of storytelling we can expect from them in the future.

“A good story is a good story,” Barack says. “Whether that’s in a documentary like yours or if it’s a scripted story that helps people understand something they didn’t understand before, we want to see if we can give voice to that.”

“We want people to be able to get outside of themselves and experience and understand the lives of somebody else, which is what a good story does,” Michelle added.

American Factory follows the lives of workers who join a new American factory opened by a Chinese billionaire in an Ohio town. “Early days of hope and optimism give way to setbacks as high-tech China clashes with working-class America,” Netflix says in description of the film.

The project will set the ultimate tone for Higher Ground, which will support both scripted and unscripted titles.

American Factory premiered August 21 on Netflix.

Black Women’s Pay Day Is Today. Be Mad And Get Money, Sis

This was originally posted on https://www.essence.com/lifestyle/money-career/black-womens-pay-day-august-22-2019-career-advice/ along with the image used.

This year, Black Women’s Equal Pay Day falls on August 22nd, exactly two weeks later than last year’s August 7th date. Every year, Black Women’s Equal Pay Day highlights our perpetual game of catch up. It symbolizes the approximate number of days a Black woman must work into the new year to make what their White non-Hispanic male counterparts made at the end of the previous year.

Despite Black women serving as chief breadwinners in at least 70 percent of our households, Black women’s compensation continues to languish—according to American Community Survey (ACS) Census data, the 2019 wage gap for Black women and men is $.61; while White female counterparts earn nearly $0.80 to the dollar.

Dismantling racism and patriarchy needs to be a unified effort to ensure all Americans are paid based on their ability and industry, not their gender and skin color. Here’s how we can play a role in our own economic liberation and work to disrupt systems that guarantee our inequality.

The intersectional pay gap is real: Black women earn only 61 cents to the dollar.

Learn to negotiate with the “double
bind” in mind.
Women
receive explicit and implicit messages that they are unfeminine and too pushy
for trying to negotiate salaries.  This
leads many women to either avoid negotiating all together or to carry the stigma
of being aggressive, ambitious, and manly which leads to backlash down the
road.

Now
imagine what Black women have to consider when adding prevalent race-based
gender stereotypes that perceive Black women as less intelligent, but also
fundamentally belligerent to this double bind phenomenon. Negotiating tactics
where Black women candidly state, “I deserve this pay amount” won’t land as
well as softer statements such as, “With this pay increase, I’ll be able to
increase team productivity by 20%” that couch pay increases as wins for the
organization or company rather than the self.

Kill the Imposter Syndrome. Imposter Syndrome stems from a chronic sense of self-doubt and
sense of intellectual fraudulence despite evidence and track records of
success. Women, including Black women, suffer from this syndrome and it’s
costing us our bread and butter. This sense of inadequacy leads us to give
others’ credit for our brilliance, shy away from higher profile projects, and
accept initial offers at new jobs. Invest in therapy or even an assertiveness
training class that helps you re-imagine your self-image.

Climb the ladder, but don’t kick it
away once you reach the top.
Don’t be one of those Black women
that cries racial and gender equality when it benefits them but remains silent,
or worse, actively impedes other Black women from making a steady climb to the
top. When more of us are represented at the table, we can more easily advocate
for our shared economic and social agendas.

Ask for corporate transparency. While it’s definitely proactive
to speak openly about salary at the workplace with colleagues, it’s an approach
that requires time to engender trust with no guarantee that co-workers will
reveal their earnings. Besides, it’s your company’s core responsibility to be
clear about its hiring practices, including how they issue salaries, bonuses,
and other forms of compensation.

Speak loudly in numbers. If you have high social currency in your office, then leverage that power to rally coworkers and higher-ups to support pay increases at the individual, departmental, or sector level.

Make it social and start a movement. Share your journey on social media. When you share how you negotiated a salary win, overcame a challenge, called out salary inequality, or even posted research you conducted about median and average salaries by industry or state, you’re making it easier for other Black women to do the same.

Start your own. Sometimes you have to create what
you seek. If you find that you’ve experienced enough income inequality based on
your gender and race and you want out, create a thoughtful exit plan before you
go so you return to the negotiating table as an employer, not an employee.

Equal work deserves equal pay. But we know it’s just not that simple. When we individually and collectively make noise and shine a spotlight on unfair salary practices, we create better working conditions not just for us, but for all.

5 Foot Peels And Masks To Keep Your Feet Pretty Beyond The Summer

This was originally posted on https://www.essence.com/beauty/foot-peels-and-foot-masks-for-pretty-feet/ along with the image used.

Many of us have those friends who only get pedicures in the summer months, and the rest of the year they could beat Antonio Brown in an ugliest feet contest. Please, treat your friend, and yourself. Several brands are making affordable foot masks and foot peels that offer quick and visible results. So there’s no excuse for anyone to settle for Flintstone soles (read: they look like they’ve been hitting the pavement, literally, with no shoes).

We always stress that your feet carry you through life, so it’s a must that you treat them with just as much care and respect as you do the rest of your body. While the slogan “feet are the new face” might be a bit of a stretch, we do agree that they need a ton of upkeep. And with these mask options that cost less than $15, smooth beach beautiful feet are even easier to achieve.
